The Warwick firefighters responded to a report that the Conimicut Lighthouse was on fire, but the emergency was quickly explained as a bonfire on a beach across Narragansett Bay in Bristol.
Petty Officer Nicole Groll, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard in Boston, said the lighthouse was not burning, but a bonfire across the Bay could have caused the confusion.
A Bristol police dispatcher confirmed that an event at the town beach included a bonfire that firefighters were supervising and for which the organizer had obtained a permit.
The Bristol Town Beach is off Asylum Road, just north of Colt State Park.
A quick look on Google maps shows that a sight line from Gaspee Point to the Bristol Town Beach would pass nearly through the Conimicut Lighthouse off Conimicut Point.
