FOXBORO — Rob Gronkowski hasn’t joined his teammates for this month’s offseason workout program. He still hasn’t committed to playing for the 2018 season. On Saturday, however, Gronk returned to Gillette Stadium for a bizarre press conference prior to a Monster Energy Supercross event.

Gronk was dressed in motocross gear — including a helmet and a shirt with his name and number on the back. He did his best to elude questions about football, his potential retirement and his plans for the 2018 season.

The tight end did slip up during this 10-minute press conference. When asked what he would say to fans wondering about this status, Gronkowski made it seem like he’d be returning for the 2018 season.

“Oh, that they’re going to see a freak-a-leak when I come back. That’s what,” Gronkowski said.

When asked if that means he is coming back, Gronk paused for a second.

“Oh, maybe.”

Phase 1 of the offseason workout program started last week. Gronkowski, along with Tom Brady, didn’t report to Gillette Stadium. But Gronk has remained in the area and has been working out with Alex Guerrero at the TB12 Center. According to multiple reports, Gronkowski is not only angling for a new contract, but plans to practice with Brady and Julian Edelman in Montana this summer.

When asked if he planned on joining his team for the upcoming optional workouts, Gronk said, “no.” And then followed up with, “I’ve got dirt-biking skills to work on.”

When asked about his status for the season, Gronk replied, “The status is doing really great. I’ve been riding dirt bikes. I’ve been training really hard. I can ‘vroom, vroom’ really good. I can ride that bike like no other and my speed is up there.”

Is he still contemplating retirement?

“Depends on how my racing skills go today,” Gronk said.

Does he plan on playing football in 2018?

“I’ve learned to never talk forward. I’m just here today in the present,” Gronkowski said. “I’m working hard. I’m riding these bikes — once you teach me — and drinking Monster Energy so you can get wild and do crazy stuff that people don’t like when I do it but I’ll just do it.”

When does he plan on making a decision on whether or not he’s going to play?

“I don’t know,” he said. “Got to see how my riding goes.”

Have you been in communication with Bill Belichick about your plans?

“Just Monster motocross that I’m worried about today,” said Gronk.

While wearing a motocross helmet, Gronk was asked when he’ll put on his Patriots helmet. Once again, it seemed like Gronkowski would return in 2018.

“The other one? When it comes down to time,” Gronk said.

When will that time be? At this point, it’s anyone’s guess.
