Legal Sea Bar review: Fresh and delicious

What about the food at the new Legal Sea Bar?

It’s fresh and well prepared, and delicious. If my dinner there Monday night with three companions is any indication, this is going to be a very popular spot.

We started with a perfect platter of sushi. The Dragon Rolls, the green spicy salmon topped with avocado ($12.95) were on point. The Clam Cakes were a terrific version with no oil residue and served with a creamy roasted red pepper sauce ($7.95). The tender calamari, Rhode Island style with hot peppers and garlic, came with a side of marinara ($14.95). It was an excellent version of the classic. Mugs of rich lobster bisque ($9.95) were satisfying and topped with meat. These starters, in any combination,  would make a meal on their own own.

Equally as excellent were the entrees. All were substantial portions, most came with light jasmine rice. This included seared salmon, the lunch version suggested by mu server ($18.95) served with rice and roasted butternut squash. The fish was perfectly cooked. The dinner version has hoison sauce and I didn’t think I needed it and made a good choice.

Filet of Sole Francese ($25.95) was a large dish of wonderfully flaky fish in a lemon white wine sauce served with rice and a lemon kale salad with a light vinaigrette dressing.

The Sesame tuna was wonderful and didn’t need the kung pao sauce poured around it. It was overkill for the dish served at market price and $32.95 on this night.

The Legal Signature Combo ($31.95) is the perfect dish for a diner who wants variety. It includes a large crab cake, four shrimp and four seared scallops, all beautifully cooked. A salad had a creamy mustard dressing which we wished had the light vinaigrette.

The coffee milk cocktail was surprisingly light and fun as was a Negroni. The wine by the glass offered Chablis and New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that paired nicely with the fish.

The space is loud, with all hard surfaces, but there’s good energy in the air. Service was attentive and quick.
